Results of Clinical Trial of Cephaloridine and Cephalexin

Abstract
Cephaloridine (Ceporan) and Cephalexin (Ceporex) are relatively new broad spectrum antibiotics recently introduced in Korea for clinical use. This is a report based on 60 cases of clinical trials of these drugs on surgical patients in this hospital during three months period in 1974.
The series consisted of 36 cases of postoperative wound infection, 18 cases of prophylactic use of antibiotics during the pre- and post- operative period and 6 cases of various soft tissue infections such as furuncle, carbuncle and cellulitis etc. There were 36 male and 24 female patients and the age ranged from one to seventy-nine years.
Ceporan was mainly used for the patient who is unable to take by mouth and Ceporex was used in other patients. Daily dosage for adults ranged from one to
three grams daily with average of 1. 5gm. In pediatric cases daily dose of 50mg/kg was administered.
We had an excellent results in 40 cases (66.7%), good in 15 cases (25.0%), fair in 3 cases (5%) and poor in 2 cases (3.3%). All in all we had 91. 6% satisfactory result in this series. The majority of those cases with poor result are cases of intraabdominal abscess which required surgical drainage or due to the organism which are resistant to this antibiotics such as Psudomonas Aeruginosa. There were
not a single case of wound infection in the case where these antibiotics were used as a prophylaxis for postoperative wound infection.
Side effects were almost negligible, in all cases. A few cases developed diarrhea after prolonged administration but became under control with simple medications.
